Waiting on Wed: Something strange and deadly by Susan Dennard

Waiting on Wed is host by Jill over at Breaking the spine. I have fun time doing this because I always end up finding some awesome books I've never heard of while I'm looking through other peoples WoWs and when I'm trying to find one that I would want to feature. My Pick this week is...

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard
Expected Publication: July 24, 2012 from HarperTeen

Outline:
There’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

Why I chose it:
Did you see the cover? If that isn't enough reason it seems like it has a little bit of everything in it paranormal, some steampunk, historical, and more.

Twilight: Taylor on Jay Leno

I think this was probably a re-run, but I still went ahead and taped it because I love my little werewolf.
I want that magazine he shows. :)

Book Review: Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday

AUTHOR: Gemma Halliday
PUBLISHED: October 1, 2011
PUBLISHER: HarperTeen
PAGES: 320
SERIES/STAND ALONE: Series (Social Suicide Book #2)
SOURCE: Me, Myshelf and I Arc Tour
CHALLENGES: None

OUTLINE:
Hartley Grace Featherstone is having a very bad day. First she finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her with the president of the Herbert Hoover High School Chastity Club. Then he's pegged as the #1 suspect in a murder. And if that weren't enough, now he's depending on Hartley to clear his name. Seriously? Not cool.

But as much as Hartley wouldn't mind seeing him squirm, she knows he's innocent, and she's the only one who can help him. Along with her best friend, Sam, and the school's resident Bad Boy, Chase, Hartley starts investigating on her own. But as the dead bodies begin to pile up, the mystery deepens, the suspects multiply, and Hartley begins to fear that she may be the killer's next victim.

My thoughts:
First off the cover it's pretty simple yet it says a lot about the story. Especially, the wording as I was looking at the cover more it dawned on me exactly what it was, and it made me laugh. I can't go into detail because of the story itself, but I had to laugh a little at it. Still, I love it and the eyes on the girl. I would love to have bright blue eyes like that.

The story follows Hartley, a girl who just found out her boyfriend was cheating on her with a color guard girl, and when Hartley goes to confront him she gets way more than she bargains for. A dead girl, a boyfriend...err...ex-boyfriend who's a suspect, a mysterious  guy, a killer on the loose, and the drama of high school. Sound interesting?  Actually, for the most part it was a fun read to try and figure out who the killer was, and I have to admit it took me some time to get an idea of who the killer was. After awhile it made sense. I did enjoy the mystery though so it wasn't all bad. The characters were okay. I didn't hate them, but I didn't love them. I think Chase and the best friend were my favorite ones. I don't think I would have been to keen on helping an ex-boyfriend like Hartley was though.

All in all I'm curious to see where the next book goes.

Follow Friday (54) Thankful

Question: It's Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. so we want to know what you are Thankful for - blogging related of course! Who has helped you out along the way? What books are you thankful for reading?

Oh goodness! I'll have to say the book blogging community alone has done an awesome job of helpinbg me out along the way. I mean without them I would be lost for sure. I'd be a deer in the headlights. I mean sure you go into a bookstore (or walmart even) and see these books on the shelves, but how are you suppose to know what any of them are about or if they're any good? Well thanks to you all I can usually pick out really good books (Sometimes even before they're out).

A few people I really look up to for books (and even when my life is a crazy mess)
Lan at The Write Obsession
You guys have no idea how much I appreciate the convos we've had through emails and txts.
Books I'm thankful for reading
Enclave and Divergent really helped me in the dystopian department.
Twilight and it's sequels for getting me to read and showing me that I can enjoy reading. (Without you I would not be Vampire Academy obsessed)
and I'm sure there are tons more, but I can't think.

What are you thankful for?

Book Review: My Not So Still Life by Liz Gallagher

AUTHOR: Liz Gallagher
PUBLISHED: May 10,2011
PUBLISHER: Wendy lamb Books
PAGES: 192
SERIES/STAND ALONE: Stand alone
SOURCE: Bought
CHALLENGES: None

OUTLINE:
Vanessa is wise beyond her years. She's never really fit in at school, where all the kids act and dress the same. She's an artist who expresses her talent in the wacky colors she dyes her hair, her makeup and clothes. She's working on her biggest art project, and counting the days until she's grown up and can really start living. That adult world seems closer when Vanessa gets her dream job at the art supply store, Palette, where she worships the couple who runs it, Oscar and Maye. And she's drawn to a mysterious guy named James, who leads her into new, sometimes risky situations. Is she ready for this world, or not?

My thoughts:
This is basically a story of how Vanessa learns that growing up to fast may not always be the best thing, and just being who you are is sometimes the best feeling you can have.

I can't say that I got to much out of this story. I wasn't really interested in the characters, or what was going on with them. If I'm going to love a story I have to be able to love the characters as well, and not just the story. If that doesn't happen then the story better be full of awesomeness. At times I thought Vanessa was kind of rude (especially to her friends). I mean your going to ignore or put down friends you have had for ever after just meeting these people who you claim are awesome and understand you better. I don't know I just felt bad for her friends I guess.

The one thing that I did enjoy was the artistic part of the book. I love reading about art, but that's as far as it goes. I suck at art, but occasionally I'll try drawing or something. After reading books that contain art or the characters that do art I'm like I want to draw. I want to be able to show my creative side. (That never happens)

I know this is really short, and not to helpful. Sometimes you get that one book that just doesn't work. It's not to say it won't work for you though. :)

I'm back with a guest post over at Alison Can Read

Yea, I'm back I took over my moms computer. :) It really sucks when you're use to having internet all the time, and then you go a week with at it. I thought I was going to go nuts. Now I'm back so I'll try to get up some of the reviews that I was able to get done.

Also, I have a guest post over at Alison Can Read for her Twilight Month here
I will be back later on.

Discussion: Review Overload?!

I haven't had a discussion on here in awhile so I figured now would be a good time. This is going to be a two part question. First question is this: How do you review? That's pretty plain and simple right? I'm talking how do you write your reviews, do you always write them the same way, so on and so forth. Do you change it up every once and awhile just for fun? To give you a little bit of what I'm talking about here I'll try to explain what I do when it comes time to write a review. I'm the type of person who can't stick to a guideline.  I hate trying to stick to one thing because for me it NEVER works. I've tried many different ways to write reviews, but when it comes right down to it I just type whatever I feel. I've tried listing things (The Body Finder), (Enclave). Video form (Hate list), (Hunger)  Categorizing by this I mean putting Plot, Characters, overview, and so on: (Only the good Spy young), (Sean Griswolds Head), but in the end I'm just good if I get anything written. I think if I were to write them like right after I finish I'd be okay, and that's usually what I try to do, but lately it's harder for me.

Second question is this: What do you do when you get behind on reviews, or do you ever get behind on reviews?
I will admit I have been horrible at it lately. (scurries away to hide) I feel like I have gotten so far behind that I won't be able to catch up, and I really want to be able to. I want these books that I've read to be available on my site. To show others that I did enjoy the books (or didn't in some cases) As of right now I feel like the poor person in the picture above. :( I'm stuck in a sea of un-reviewed books. I know this post will probably be taken a few ways: 1.) I read them, but don't review them 2.) I suck at reviewing. 3.) Maybe I don't really
care.

Book Review: Anna dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

AUTHOR: Kendare Blake
PUBLISHED: August 30,2011
PUBLISHER: Tor Teen
PAGES: 316
SERIES/STAND ALONE: Series
SOURCE: Won from Rachel at PaperCuts
CHALLENGES: 2011 Debut

OUTLINE:
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.
So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.
When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn't expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas's life.

MY THOUGHTS:
First off, I have to say complete and total cover love. I absolutely love this cover and it represents the book perfectly. I've always been interested in ghosts, and stories about them. Whether they're real stories or made up.  So it's no surprise that I would come to love Anna Dressed in Blood. When you first read the synopsis you're thinking (or I was thinking) this is going to be a gory, dark, horror/thriller driven book. I mean with Cas going around killing ghosts. You know people who are suppose to be ALREADY dead? How can it not be a horror story, or a thriller? You never know what might pop out at you.

Kendare Blakes
writing is to die for. (I know, I know I couldn't help myself) I love how descriptive she was with the ghosts, and Anna (and her dripping blood red dress). I fell in love. I know it's kind of hard to imagine falling in love with a book like this because it definitely did not hold anything back. When someone died a horrible death it described it perfectly. I'm not sure how I would know what a perfect horrible death is, but it read well. When an author can make you look over your shoulders while your reading that is a sign of awesome writing in my opinion. I kid you not I was sitting in my moms apartment building parking lot at like 10:30pm (I was waiting on my brother) and I started reading this, and I maybe got a chapter read and quit because I kept hearing things and looking in my backseat. Can we say chicken? (There's a shed and an old camper sitting  across the way which made it worse.) I loved the way it made a complete 180 or is 360? Anyways, I like how it went from one thing to something else. I was like okay this is not what I was expecting, but it worked for me. I like being completely wrong about things it makes it that much more fun to read.

I loved pretty much each character: Anna, Carmel, Cas, Thomas, even the cat Tybalt.  I enjoyed how one of the main characters was a teenage boy named Cas. That's not something you see very often in YA. There were parts when I was like just stop being an ass and let people help you, make friends, be a teenager, but then I can see why he acted the way he did. I guess moving and killing ghosts isn't easy on the friend and life department. Anna, oh Anna dressed in blood. I think she was my favorite out of all of them. Despite her ghostly-ness she seemed more real then some of the others. We got to learn more about her and what made her the way she was. She just had this sadness to her. I wanted to be able to help her. Thomas was the geeky boy that quickly attached himself to Cas. You always have to have that sidekick, and he was one that enjoyed reading about. Then there was Carmel, the queen bee, at the high school yet she seemed down to earth. Then of course you have the jocks, but I won't bore you with them. :) Tybalt was Cas' moms cat. This cat reminds me of mine. This one hated pretty much everyone but the mom, and mine is the same way she hates everyone but me. Cats are so picky! it's weird though because this cat could sense when a ghost was around and he's stare off into space or do other weird things, and I'm like my cat does the same creepy stuff. Does that mean I have a ghost?

Quotes:
-I don't like the idea of you using these girls all the time. (Cas' mom)
You make it sound so dirty (Cas)

-Completely, She's bruce lee, the hulk, and Neo from The matrix all rolled into one. (Cas)
Yes, thank you for the entirely incomprehensible pop-culture reference. (Gideon)

-Yes, smashing you'll be just like those four chaps in the movie. You know the one, with the over-sized marshmallow. (Gideon)
-You've got to be kidding me. (Cas)

I can't wait for Girl of Nightmares (Anna #2) and it doesn't come out until next August.

Waiting on Wed: Don't Breathe A Word

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Okay, so I'm trying to stay with the theme of contemporary Month. My pick this week I is Don't breathe a word.
Don't breathe a word by Holly Cupala
Expected Publication: January 3, 2012
Outline:
Joy Delamere is suffocating...

From asthma, which has nearly claimed her life. From her parents, who will do anything to keep that from happening. From dangerous Asher, who is smothering her from the inside out.

Joy can take her cruel words until the night they go too far.

Now, Joy will leave everything behind to find the one who has offered his help, a homeless boy called Creed. She will become someone else. She will learn to survive. She will breathe…if only she can get to Creed before it’s too late.

Set against the gritty backdrop of Seattle’s streets and a cast of characters with secrets of their own, Holly Cupala’s powerful new novel explores the hurt of bullying, the meaning of family, and how far a girl will go to discover her own strength.

Why I chose it:
I really don't know it just sounds intriguing and it sounds like it could make you stop and think. I know I usually have better reasons why, but sometimes you don't have reasons. It's just that it has that something that catches your attention. I haven't read anything by this author yet, but I do have a few books.

November 15: Top Ten Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Have Been On My Shelf FOREVER

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created  at The Broke and the Bookish.

Occasionally I'll get the urge to make a list of whatever it is they're featuring that particular week, and if I think I can make it to ten then I'll use go for it.
This weeks list is "Top Ten Books That Have Been On My Shelf For The Longest But I've Never Read." I know for a fact that I can do this one. Hell, I could make a top 20 list, but I'll stick to ten. :) If I did this with exactly the books I have had on my shelf the longest none of them would be YA. This is because when I started reading I read (or tried to read more Mystery like Mary Higgins Clark)
So for this list I will do half and half. Half will be YA and the other well non-YA. :)

Another thing I was going to send out Shades of Gray to somebody for RAK because I noticed it was on their wishlist and I forgot to write it down. So I have a copy of that for anyone who reads this and lives in the US and wants to read the book or has it on the RAK wishlist. First come though. :)

P.s- Oh, and I went to the movies tonight with a guy from work. (This sounds like it doesn't matter, but trust me it was a BIG deal for me. I rarely if at all go out with anyone. I'm a little anti-social.) Anyways, they had Breaking Dawn cups as the large drinks (See picture above. The New Moon was from when that movie came out) and I was like OMG. (I didn't say it but I was thinking it) He knew that I liked Twilight because my co-workers and I keep talking about going to the marathon Thursday. So he ended up getting the drinks (I'm sure he was thirsty too)  So I got a cup. Actually two cups because he's like if you want mine you can have it also. Then when he dropped me off, and I forgot the other one he txt me and is like I forgot to give you mine. Aww! Okay I'm done.

November is Contemporary Month

Just Contemporary
Hosted by Ashley at Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing
It took a bit to decide that I wanted to do this for November because I'm usually more on the side of Paranormal, but I think maybe this month is a good time to take a step back from that scene, and try some contemporary books. While I have quite a bit of contemp books on my shelf I read very few of them. I feel bad about it to because the ones I have actually read I've loved them. Raw Blue, Identical, The Day Before, and I'm sure there's more, but for now that's all I got. (all which I have reviews for) Starting tomorrow (after I finish Anna dressed in blood) I will begin my journey through contemporary books for this month. I have my stack sitting here on my desk so we will see how far I long I can get. If you have any suggestions as to where I should start tomorrow let me know. (It also depends on what I have on my shelf) I'm pretty sure Where She Went will be first.

Follow Friday (52)

Question: In light of 11.11.11 and Veteran's Day tell us about your favorite solider and how he or she is saving the world. Fictional or real life.

Wow, This one has definitely got me stumped to the point where I wasn't going to do it, but then I thought some more. While I don't really know very many Veteran's personally I do get to interact with them where I work (Cvs Pharmacy. I fill scripts.) I'm able to talk to them and hear the stories some, and these people are usually the sweetest  people. Sometimes that have no one else to talk to. I know I may complain a whole bunch about my job, but really I know that I'm helping these people live a little better by trying to help them live longer and healthy lives. Our pharmacy is right by a base sort of so we get all types of soldiers coming in. As for the fictional part I would think that any of the Dystopian books where the characters rebel against the goverment are pretty brave. I just finished reading Legend and really enjoyed Day and June's stories. When it comes I highly recommend it. I'll probably get around to a review.

Book Shelf Tour: Swimming in a sea of books

Of course I'm not actually swimming in a sea of books that would be quite difficult and maybe a little uncomfortable, unless of course they're those soft children cloth books. You know the ones I'm talking about? My grandma use to have a few at her house when we were growing up. You could throw them at each other and not get hurt, but I would never do such a thing.

I felt like it was time to do a little book remodel. I had all my books stacked on my black bookcase to where you couldn't see what was behind so I decided to "remodel them" put them on my desk and tv stand. Give them space to breathe. It's probably not fun being all bunched together.

Enjoy watching me walk my way through the shelves, and you can totally ignore my odd noises I make while I'm narrating. It's a nervous habit I guess.

Covers Revealed: High on Y...A that is!

Guess what time it is? That's right I've collected more awesome book covers that have been revealed in the past month or two (maybe 3 I can never remember) Sorry if you've already seen them, but I like to do a post with more then just one that way we can love them all at once. :)

To learn what series they belong to just hover over the picture. :) Along with that I added my own little thoughts. I can be clever when I want. :)

I hope in doing this I'm able to bring you some covers you may have not seen.

What did you all think of these covers? I just noticed that almost all these have a similar color theme to them (except for dreamless) I have to admit I love pretty much everyone of them. I'm glad that most of them also stick with the original book cover look (they look similar to their first and second books)
