Book Review: Fade by Lisa McMann

Quick Thought (or not)

I finally got around to reading the second book in the wake trilogy by Lisa McMann, and to say I'm glad that I read it would be a lie. I really, really wanted to enjoy it. I think I had pretty much the same problems with Fade as I did with it's 1st book, Wake.

Pacing

It was slow, and the build up to the major event in the book didn't really do anything for me. I was looking for some shit to go down, and I know it's a YA book so maybe that's why. 

Characters

I thought by reading Fade I would grow to like Janie more as a character, but it just proved that sometimes characters don't really change. Their situations may change a bit, but the personality will always be there. Did I care what happened to Janie? Of course I did I would sound like a cold hearted bitch if I were to say I didn't care what happened at that party, but then again Janie put her own self in the position. If you know you're going somewhere that's putting you in a situation where things could get bad be smart about it.

Cabel was the one character I enjoyed in Wake, and I still enjoyed him in this book. While I think he was being a D-bag when Janie wanted to continue on with the case I could understand his point of view as well.

Ending 

The ending was definitely the part that I had the most love for, although learning more about what dream catching will do to the person was hard I believe it added to the story.

Overall
I just think it gave away to much in the beginning for me to keep my anticipation up. I'm sure you're wondering why I even finished it if I had such a problem with it right?   I have to finish series. It's one of those pesky reader habits of mine. I'm going to end up reading Gone as well. Maybe, just maybe it'll be better?

Quick Thought (or not)

Before starting Crash I was going into it hoping I would love it because everyone else seems to love her books. Sadly, Lisa McMann's book always seem to be a miss for me. It's not that I particularly hate them. I guess I should say I have more of a love/hate thing for them. I feel almost the same way about this one as I did with her first book Wake. I love the concept of the book, but I can't really put my finger on what didn't work. Needless to say I haven't yet read the other two books in that series either. I do however have them on my shelf. I've wanted to try and read those to see if maybe it's just a first book thing with this author. I also have her book Cryer's Cross. What do you guys think?

Screenwriter Christopher Landon (Disturbia, Paranormal Activity 2) spoke with Shock Till You Drop today about his directorial debut, the horror anthology Burning Palms and updated us on the status of his next script, Wake, a supernatural thriller based on the book series by Lisa McMann.

"It's sort of a vehicle for Miley Cyrus," Landon says, "She is looking to sort of get out of her cutesy Hannah Montana image, which she's actually doing quite well. She wanted to do something a little edgier and a little darker, so we're making this movie hopefully...It's about a teenage girl who has a rare form of narcalepsy. When she's within a certain distance of someone sleeping, she passes out and goes into their dreams."

Though the source material is young adult fare, Landon says that both it and the film version don't fall far from the horror genre.

"It definitely has a spooky element to it," he says, "It's slightly origin-story-esque... She sees it as a curse. You know, something that she keeps very secret and hidden and, as a result, has sort of isolated herself. Then, through circumstance she ends up having to embrace it. She has to use it to solve a crime, if you will. It's fun. We get to really play with the visual kind of thing. It's not like 'Inception' where it's very consistent because we're going in and out of so many different people's dreams and nobody dreams alike. Some of it will be animated. Some of it will be really, really big with epic-looking stuff. And sometimes she lands in a dream where absolutely fucking nothing is happening which, you know, is very true to life."

I actually think this is pretty cool that these books will be turned into movies. I really love the whole idea of the book and the dreaming aspect of it. I wasn't particularly fond of Janie, but I haven't read the others two books (I need to do that) so I'm hoping that I'll like her a little better in the others. I like Cabel though, and it would be interesting to see who they would get to play him. If you read the books who would you choose to play him? I honestly don't know I'm not good remembering actors/actresses name and what not. As for Miley playing the lead. Hum? I'm going to have to say I can't really see her acting the part, but I could be wrong. I can honestly say that I like Miley. I have nothing against her. I think Hannah Montana was a cute disney show. (Okay no hating me for this) I liked her in The Last Song, and I thought she did well. I guess it's just seeing her put into this character. I don't know. LOL. I'm torn.

What do you all think about it?
