Book review: Through Her Eyes by Jennifer Archer

It seems their lives are linked by fate and the artifacts she found, but as Tansy begins spending more and more time in the past, her present world starts to fade away. Tansy must untangle herself from Henry's dangerous reality—before she loses touch with her own life forever.

THOUGHTS:
This was actually a first for me in YA Ghost stories to read, and I must say I was not disappointed. I love the fact that it took place in Texas. (I've lived here my whole life)  It's nice to see Texas brought to life in books, even if Cedar Canyon is a fictional town it brought the life style of Texas and small towns to the forefront. Although not all Texans are cowboys, and we don't all where cowboy hats. What a big misconception. It's ok Tansy I'll forgive you. It would be cool to have a mom as a writer. I guess it might get old after a while moving like she does, but think of all the adventures you could have and people you would get to meet.

It took the story some time to pick up because Tansy, her mom, and grandpa just get to Cedar Canyon, and have to get settled in to a house that apparently her Grandpa lived at when he was younger. Upon arriving there her grandpa becomes consumed with feelings that the reader doesn't learn about until later. I have to say this I love seeing another family member in the story. As with most YA's you don't get alot of the Protags that have that connection to their family whether it's grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins you get the picture. (Maybe, I'm just not reading those books though. Who knows.) I love that it's the grandpa too. They're usually the laid back ones (or at least mine is he just goes along with whatever my grandma or others say). Being new in town means having to learn where to fit in especially in a town where everyone grew up together. I'm talking since diapers. So it's no surprise that Tansy takes to herself  in the beginning, and gets caught up in the old notebook of poetry she finds in her basement (Some things aren't always as they seem though), and also her photography. Which leads to the world hopping. Looking through her camera and seeing things in black n white. Things that shouldn't be there. Intriguing is it not?  After a few encounters with the locals though she let's her guard down by befriending Bethyl Ann aka Stinky and after while Tate.

I think my favorite character wasn't tansy, but her crazy Shakespearean friend Bethyl Ann. Bethyl Ann is that person who doesn't care what others think of her. She marches to the set of her own drums. She's herself, unique and proud. I mean who would enjoy being called stinky? Apparently she doesn't mind she just ignores it. She embraces her nerdiness. :) For that I applaud her.

Review: The Best and Hardest Thing by Pat Brisson

This addictively readable portrayal of Molly's struggle to accept her pregnancy and the fact that her life will never be the same is told entirely in poetry, from sonnets to haiku.

THOUGHTS:

This book was an easy read just because of the way it was written. (Versus form) Even though it was written this way it still packed a bit of a punch. If I had to go through what Molly went through at age 15 I don't know what I would have done. I don't know if I could have made those decisions. At 15 I wasn't thinking about whether or not to keep a baby, or any of the other things she thought (actually) The book shows just how much peer pressure one person can sometimes take, or how just a single word can completely change a persons way of thinking. That person can be on the right track, and be a good kid (Let's face it that's still what a 15 year old is) then one little word assignment from a teacher, and her life spirals out of control. She no longer wants to be a "good girl" "nice" "studious" "saintly" all words which her classmates chose for her.

So what does she do about this? Easy. Yeah, that pretty much somes it up. She changes herself into someone new to get Grady's attention. I don't know it seemed like it went a little to well for her. (Maybe guys are just that easy to impress, or he just wanted some. My guess being the second.) Sorry for being kind of straight forward, but it's the truth. That was one part I was like really? You're going to make it that easy on him to get what he wants? Smart girls can do stupid things apparently. I had a hard time really liking the characters if you couldn't tell from the above. Everyone just seemed stupid.

I did like the book if not for any other reason then it hit on some subjects that teenagers are faced with in teenager-hood? Teenager-dom? Adolescence that's the word. (I still liked the other words better. Total Ashley words) so that's a plus. :) If anything I hope it helps others who read it to understand that sometimes one word can change a person.

I know it's a bit of a short review. Sometimes that happens I can only think of a few things to say. *sigh*

What could possibly been in here? A Work in Progress

While I'm procrastinating on writing my reviews. (I'm working on them.) :) I thought maybe I would put up some of my friends writing. (I guess it's the beginning to our story we started last year.) It's only the first few paragraphs. Let me know what you think.

Racing as fast as I can down the corridor, I follow the screams. Opening the door to room 102, I witness a young blonde haired girl relentlessly struggling to escape from the straps on her hospital bed. “Dr. Castle?” asking as I help fellow nurse, Wendy try to hold the vampire still.


“Her body is trying to reject the serum. If she doesn’t calm down the serum is going to spread to her heart too quickly and kill her.” Dr. Castle answers as he tries to sedate the screaming girl. Her bright blue eyes nervously shoot at each of us hovering over her. Obviously frightened, she desperately tries to free herself. Telling her to calm down is just as unsuccessful. Glancing at Dr. Castle, I can see sweat beads drizzling down his forehead from his shaggy brown hair. His dark green eyes meet with mine and without words, we exchange the same fear. This girl is going to die.


Reed Castle is an intern at S.M.R. Working under Dr. Sizemore, he’s already helped save over 50 people in four short months. I admire him. It’s not hard to be attracted to him either. He’s only 26, two years older than me and has all the qualities of Mr. Perfect. His unruly brown hair goes well with his tan “surfer” body. When he first started at the center, the other nurses and myself wooed over him. Of course, none of us stand a chance with Allison Mercer around. With her perky breasts, size zero body frame, bright blue eyes and straight blonde hair, we immediately lose any shot with Dr. Castle. Greeting him every morning with her perfect smile and squeaky voice, Reed winks at her and gives his devilish crooked smile.


Wendy and I still don’t understand why Allison works here. She should be frolicking in a bikini on a beach while a camera follows her around. Go flirt with some celebrity! Leave our eye candy alone. Allison shouldn’t be a threat to Wendy and me. We’re both lean girls although we’re “healthy” size 8s. Maybe it’s just the jealousy from knowing Reed shows her more attention. It could be that he only likes blondes. Wendy and I both have brown hair, the only difference being Wendy’s is short and straight and mine is long and curly. Maybe Dr. Castle only likes younger girls. Allison is only 19. Wendy is 28 and I am 24. Oh, who cares. He’s still my eye candy.


Dr. Sizemore enters the room and see’s the wild female vampire we barely have under control. “What’s her status Dr. Castle?” Dr. Sizemore asks as his hazel eyes check the monitor.


“She’s crashing. Her body is rejecting the serum and the sedative. We can’t get her to calm down.”
As the young girl’s screams become louder and pierces through my ears. My adrenaline begins pumping and it becomes harder to hold her still. As I watch the two doctors try vigorously to save her, I cant help but want to cry. If she only knew that we are trying to help her, maybe she would settle down. Dr. Sizemore once told me that the process of restoring mortality is excruciatingly painful. I can only imagine the agony this tiny girl is feeling now. She can’t be more than 15.
Suddenly, the vampire stops struggling on the bed. At first thinking the sedation has finally kicked in, I smile but it fades when the monitor flat-lines. I watch as the girl takes her last breath and her eyes close. Unlike the rest of us in the room, Dr. Sizemore is used to seeing the serum turn deadly. As we stand staring at the body, Dr. Sizemore scratches his head through his grey hair and says “Take the body to the incinerator.” before leaving the room. Dr. Castle quickly follows him.


Standing next to the girl’s bed, I take her cold hand into mine. As a single tear runs down my cheek, I close my eyes and say a quiet prayer. Many people believe vampires have no souls and without a soul, they cannot go to heaven. I believe they’re wrong. If vampires have no souls and are truly “dead” then how is it that we can restore their mortality? So staying true to my faith, I say a prayer for every person we fail to save hoping to ensure them a spot in heaven. Like the vamp lovers say, they are still human… they are still God’s creations.

Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?
Oh my gosh! There are tons of authors I would love to sit down with and talk with. I think we would all probably agree to that. If I have to choose just 3 though first would be Richelle Mead, author of the Va series, to see where she came up with the ideas and just a whole bunch of other things. :) Second would be Kiersten White, Author of Paranormalcy, I love reading her blog and book. She's always has something funny to say on her blog. I laugh everytime I visit her site. Her writing is so light and fluffy to me yet it can have those moments. Third would be Karsten Knight, Author of Wildefire, he just seems like an awesome person to talk to and he makes me laugh with the vlogs he does on his site. What can I say? I lvoe people who can make me laugh

Okay so I don't know what the hell is going on with my follow thing, but it won't let me follow anyone. or I would. Anyone have any ideas why it won't let me? Is there a certain number you can follow?

 

Date a girl who writes (An Ode to Date a girl who reads)

Alright, I didn't want to be biased, and just have a reader one so I found one that somebody wrote for writers as well. :)

DATE A GIRL WHO WRITES...

Date a girl who writes because she will be able to recall in detail the dialog between you two, and while it gets you in trouble, it's endearing and sweet at the same time that she remembers. This also forces you to choose your words carefully and you will become an expert in diction.

Date a girl who writes because she understands the complexities of characters, and knows you are more than your successes, failures, winnings, or losses. She loves all the layers of you, all the deep parts and even the shallow. When you are acting like the villain, she will see the goodness in you. When you are the hero, she'll still secretly admire your flaws. All the depths of you become her big adventure.

Date a girl who writes because she will give you the most beautiful settings you've ever seen. She writes about the paradises she imagines, the paradises she has been to, and shares them with you.

Date a girl who writes because sometimes a little silence is welcome.

Date a girl who writes because the post-it on your refrigerator reminding you to buy milk will be original and full of adorable metaphors. And because she is so creative, she'll put the post-it in your shoe rather than on your fridge.

In the fairy tale that is your life together, she will always make you prince charming, and happily ever after is a guarantee.

Date a girl who writes because when the poetry dies, she will make sure her prose keeps you alive.

Date a girl who writes because she understands the value of word choice, and will mean everything she says to you.

Date a girl who writes because she will ask you interesting things like "What does your name mean?" so that she may use it in a book someday. Not to mention you get to have a better understanding of yourself when you Google your own name.

She's always looking for the page-turner, which becomes quite exciting for you.

The storyline will never have to end. She will write all the sequels that keep your love breathing. And just so that you remember all the things you love about her, she'll make sure to include prequels too.

You'll never have to worry about dementia, amnesia, or Alzheimer's in your later life. She has already written out your story so that you may remember each other forever.

Buying gifts for her is oh-so-simple because she knows the incredible worth of a pen and paper.

She'll write you emails because the laptop is her friend, but prefers to show you how she cares by painstakingly writing you pages upon pages of letters when you two are separated.

Date a girl who writes because she can take criticism and turn it into wit, disappointment into accomplishment, and sadness into laughter with the wave of her pen.

Sex is like a dirty, raunchy romantic novel you don't dare read in public.

She will spend her life coming up with a thousand different ways to tell you how incredible you are as she is not fond of repetition. But the words she will wear out is "I love you," because even she knows there is no better substitute for them in the history of writing.

Date a girl who writes because you will be her muse, her inspiration. Without you, she will have writer's block. Or write the greatest tragedy since Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Either way, you are the man she will always write.

Everyday she fascinates you with a new genre. Today she is Romance, tomorrow Philosophy.

Date a girl who writes because when the cold winter of life traps you in old age, there will be somebody there to describe for you the summers in Paris, heat in Arabian nights, and tropical forests in South America so that you feel the warmth of adventure as if you were there. And so, in the twilight of your life, you will feel the touch of youth.

And finally, you must date a girl who writes because it is she who will allow you to live forever. With just her pen, she will make sure that you never grow old nor die nor fade, remembered for generations to come. A character in one of her stories, you will be given the gift of immortality.

I was just looking around  because I'm being stubborn, and don't want to write reviews (which I need to, maybe later) I found this on Jillian's site Random Bookish Rambling and thought it was true.

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag.She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent.

Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilightseries.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

Book Review: Enclave

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

MY THOUGHTS:

Let me take a second to say OMG! I absolutely loved this book! If you read my blog, or know anything about me then you know I'm really not one for the dystopian type novels. Well I think I may have found the exception, and maybe it will change my mind. Whatever the reason this was an awesome book. I finished it in about a day in half.  It's divide into 2 parts the underground: Which is where the compound is and it's where most people live. (Although they live in different compounds) along with the Freaks (zombie like creatures). The second half of the book takes place above ground. Where other people live...like gangs.

The story starts off with "Brat or girl 15" having a ceremony because she has lived past the age of 15, and now has the right to a name which she learns is going to be Deuce. Along with the name she becomes one of 3 things, she chooses to become a huntress because that's what she's wanted her whole life to be able to fight outside. Now a huntress she's given the opportunity to fight against the "freaks" but she gets stuck with a partner who keeps to himself and plays by his own rules. At first she's not happy with it he likes the rules they're what's kept herself all this time. Now though she's beginning to question the authority, and by doing that she loses the only place and people she's ever known.

*SPOILER-Y*

When one thing leads to another Fade and Deuce get kicked to the upside. (They get pushed to the top, and that's not a good thing.) Living above ground means survival of the fittest. (If you're a girl it's even worse. You pretty much get treated like a slutty slave) Together Deuce and Fade must learn to trust and help each other. Fade came from the topside, and knows what it's like to live and what must be done to live. While above they run into problems gangs mainly.

I honestly don't think I can put into words how much I loved and enjoyed this book. I think I've been trying to write this darn review for a few weeks now. :) Sometimes I feel like I'm just repeating myself over and over on each review. That's not what I want, but I can't help it. This book definitely has me looking for some other good dystopian novels now. (Note I read the hunger games wasn't a big fan. Trying to read the forest of hands and feet still can't get past 100 pages. Started Delirium I kinda liked it. As for others I don't know) Anyways, I think now whenever I read A dystopian it's going to be measured to this one. I shouldn't do that, but what can I say that's just me. I absolutely loved the world building in it. The idea of people living underground in sewer like systems was intriguing (yet kind of gross). Where else could you possibly go though if the world above lay in ruins. You can't live in the skies. Unless you had a really awesome ship that didn't need fuel of some sort. (Totally off topic I know)   I liked how they found that everyday things were fascinating. Things that maybe they've never seen before. (This is where notes would have come in handy for me)

As for the characters I loved Duece I thought she was a strong character, and held her own. Although she was a little naive at first thinking that her superiors (I forget what they call themselves) had everyones best intentions at hand. (When do they ever?) She soon learned that they didn't know much of anything and they weren't willing to listen to others that did. (Namely Fade). She cared alot for her friends, and for those she didn't know. Which we see more of when things got crazy on the topside. Her one flaw was that she forgave w-a-y to easily (and quick) especially with what almost happened. I do think she has room to grow. It will be interesting to see how. :) 

Fade, there's one of him in (almost) every book. The mysterious, not well known guy who happens to fall into place with the girl. I'm totally not complaining though I adore him maybe as much (if not more) then some of my other literary hotties. He's the one who defies the Elders (I looked it up that's what they're called), who knows what living above is like.He starts off being this guarded person not letting anyone in, but eventually he opens up. We get to see that he does have a good heart. Boy, what I would do for him. :) 

Then we have Tegan who we meet above. I definitely have a soft spot for her, and all the crap that she went through with the gangers, and the daily beatings. 

Stalker, who is one of the gangers. I wanted to like him, but after I thought about it awhile he treated girls like they were nothing. The gangs did alot worse. I can handle the fights, but the raping part was over the top. There could have been a better way to make him a bad guy.

I'm thinking maybe the only complaint I had was I would have liked a little more of the underground I think to see more of what the life was REALLY like before everything happened with Deuce and Fade. That part of the story went a little quick for me. We didn't get to see much of Deuces Friends. We didn't get to learn to much about the other two groups. (I know it's kind of self explanatory)

 If you haven't read this book yet (and you love dystopians) I HIGHLY recommend it. :)

1. Richelle Mead author of the vampire Academy. Ok, so technically I met her last December for the Last Sacrifice tour, but I didn't get to talk to her or anything. She just signed my books, and that was it. No picture or anything. Which kind of bummed me out. So yes, I would love to actually be able to meet and get a picture with her.

2. Leah Clifford author of A Touch Mortal because she always seems so sweet and cool when she does her Vlogs. (I totally fogot where she does them at)

3. Kiersten White author of Paranormalcy and Supernaturally because if she's as funny as she is on her blog it would be awesome to get to meet her.

4. Karsten Knight author of Wildefire okay so two words: His Vlogs.

5. Ally Carter author of The Gallagher Girls series

Covers Revealed: What YA covers aren't Pretty?

I'm mean seriously every (Okay almost every) YA cover is gorgeous. Yes, alot of them are similar in some way. I read someone's blog today about the covers, and for the life of me I can't remember whose blog is was. Sorry! I do know that I liked what she said about the covers. (Damn I wish I could remember)

A Million Suns: Sequel to Across the Universe by Beth Revis

I have to admit I haven't yet read AtU, but I do have it so it's coming up for me to read. I kind of like this cover more then AtU I like the blue-ish, purple-ish feel to it

Perception: Book 2 of the Clarity Series by Kim Harrington

I'm not really sure which cover I like out of this series. I like the coloring in the first, but I like how she has trees behind her in this one. I also like the way it looks like the sun is shining on her.

The Last Echo: Book 3 in The Body Finder series by Kimberly Derting

I don't have alot to say about this one except I love how all the book covers kind of go together. :)

The Golden Lily: Book 2 in The Bloodline Series by Richelle Mead

OMG! The first book isn't even out yet, and already there is a cover for the second. I am totally dying for the first one to come out. I'm jealous of those that have it already. :(

Truth: Book 2 in The XVI series by Julie Karr

This may come as a shock, but I actually don't have the first book in this series yet. I know wow right. I do like this cover though. :)
